Locked into VSphere

SimpliVity has focused on vSphere first, for its market share and excellent breadth of capability. SimpliVity is also working on expanding its coverage with KVM support announced and Hyper-V on our roadmap for GA. We launched SimpliVity on a single hardware platform and have expanded through partnerships, such as Cisco and Lenovo.

 

VMware integration makes SimpliVity too expensive

SimpliVity has chosen to start with the VMware hypervisor by choice, not limitation. Our architectural advantages help to lighten the load in terms of licensing charges. With SimpliVity, fewer nodes are required to manage more data and more workloads. The Accelerator card offload of dedupe & compression means we run all the infrastructure tasks in 4 v CPU whereas competitors best practice is typically twice that. Our expansive enterprise functionality also reduces the need for “add-on” services which consume additional resource. Less CPU overhead allows us to run more workloads & provide better ROI for application licensing.
Fewer nodes = fewer sockets = fewer licenses. Moreover, SimpliVity features are availablewith just the standard edition of vSphere allowing customer choice & lower licensing costs where Enterprise / Enterprise+ features are not required.

 

SimpliVity doesn’t support all of VMware’s features

SimpliVity integrated support for VMware is unmatched. SimpliVity enjoys a productive partnership with VMware, unlike others who are actively battling VMware publicly and building their own hypervisor.
Additionally, we have a reference architecture for vRealize Automation Suite. VMware architecture was designed for legacy storage and network, hyperconverged renders some of their features and approaches unnecessary for this new architecture. Many remain appropriate and SimpliVity fully supports those.

 

Standalone management is better than vCenter integration

We are the only one who does everything through vCenter, our competitors may say that they do, but then when you dig deeper they have lots of caveats where you will need to use other interfaces as well to complete common operational tasks. vCenter is already most customers’ existing management tool. SimpliVity gives you true single pane of glass management by plugging into vCenter. No separate screens, no separate GUIs, no new training needed: if you know how to use vCenter, in 5 minutes, you’ll know how to use SimpliVity.

 

SimpliVity is not a true Software Defined Data Center

All SimpliVity behavior is software-defined and field-upgradable. All aspects of the system and its behavior can be upgraded in the field through software upgrades without downtime or user disruption. This includes the SimpliVity OmniStack Accelerator Card, which contains an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) that, by definition, is software-defined and loaded at boot-time. Purpose-built hardware is hardly unique to SimpliVity.
When was the last time you ran software without hardware? Sometimes purpose-built hardware is exactly what you need: NVIDIA for graphics acceleration and FusionIO for application performanc are purpose-built PCIe cards. Inline deduplication, compression and optimization are resource-intensive—there’s no way around it. In Hyperconverged Infrastructure, you don’t want inline data optimization to degrade application performance; that’s why we use the dedicated card to assist it. In SimpliVity’s architecture, data efficiency improves performance. In Nutanix’s architecture, inline deduplication degrades performance.

 

Documentation and an open API

Of course, SimpliVity comes with a full set of documentation and many public Reference Architectures for best practice with common workloads. We’d be happy to discuss any aspect of the technology if you have questions.
SimpliVity has an open API and CLI, which our customers use to automate operations. Our management is through vCenter. Many tools can plug into the vCenter APIs for operations and reporting. For example, you can set up batch processing to modify a group of backup policies at once. Most customers prefer the management GUI to CLI as it provides comprehensive and convenient access to necessary capabilities. REST API is on the roadmap and we have integrations with our partners VMware (for vRealize Automation Suite) and Cisco (for UCS Director).
